Twenty years ago The Highland Drove was on its last legs, run down and facing an ignominious end of being converted into houses. Great Salkeld villager Donald Newton, who had enjoyed a mis-spent youth in the Drove, cooked up a plan to spend his mis-spent mid-life crisis there too, bought the pub and with his family has turned it into a haven of everything a good country pub should be.
Award winning food, real ales, a notable wine list, roaring fires in winter and a friendly team whose intention it is for you to walk out feeling wonderful – The Highland Drove is an inn where locals and visitors alike have found a home from home in the Eden Valley, a little piece of paradise. It’s the sort of place on a first visit you walk in as a customer and leave as a friend.
The inn has been a centre of hospitality for hundreds of years, being located on the old droving route from the Scottish trysts – market sales – which saw highland cattle, Kyloes which were swum across from the isles to the mainland over the kyles, walked to markets in the north of England. While the cattle quenched their thirsts on the banks of the River Eden, the hardy drovers ate, drank, talked and sang the nights away.
Today The Highland Drove has been recognised by Les Routiers as Northern Dining Pub Of The Year and The Good Pub Guide called it Cumbria Dining Pub Of The Year. As good as it is to have these accolades, it is the steady stream of returning customers that are worth more than any certificate on the wall.
The Kyloes dining experience at the Highland Drove has expanded to the nearby Cross Keys at Carleton, Penrith, run by Donald’s son Paul, where the same high levels of hospitality and food excellence continues.
